Contact Topology in Montréal
April 26-27, 2003, UQAM, Montréal
Announcement

The Centre Interuniversitaire de Géométrie et Topologie (CIRGET) organizes short workshops every year on topics of current mathematical activity within the general areas of Geometry and Topology.

Organizer: O. Collin (collin@math.uqam.ca)

Subject: The workshop will focus on recent advances in the fast growing area of Contact Topology, with main emphasis on 3-dimensional contact manifolds and their relationship to the topology of 3-manifolds, knot theory and symplectic 4-manifolds.

Speakers include: V. Colin (U. de Nantes), Y. Eliashberg (Stanford U.), J. Etnyre (U. Pennsylvania), D. T. Gay (U. Arizona), K. Honda (U. Southern California), W. Kazez (U. Georgia), G. Matic (U. Georgia).

As with previous CIRGET workshops, we expect many participants, not necessarily working in this area but more broadly in Geometry and Topology, from various universities in North America. There is no registration fee, but individuals who wish to participate should contact the organizer in advance.

Location: The workshop will take place in room SH-3420 in the Pavillon Sherbrooke building of the Université du Québec à Montréal, located at 200 Sherbrooke Street West in downtown Montreal. The building lies between Jeanne-Mance and Saint-Urbain streets near the Place des Arts metro station. If the main doors were locked, you may have to enter through 201 West President-Kennedy Street, and a security gard will guide you to the venue.

The conference will officially begin with coffee and croissants at 9am in room SH-2420 on Saturday (April 26th), however there might be a get together on Friday evening, for those who arrive early enough for dinner. There will be talks all day Saturday, followed by a wine and cheese at 6pm in room PK-5115. The workshop will continue in the morning on Sunday (April 27th) in room SH-2420 of the same building, as many participants will want to head back home unrushed in the afternoon.

Travel: It is advised  that participants buy their plane ticket to Montréal as soon as possible in order to keep costs to a minimum, and surely everything should be organized at least 3 weeks in advance.
